A boat travels from City A to City B upstream and returns back to City A downstream. If the average speed of the total journey is 48 mph and the speed of the stream is 10 mph, what is the upstream speed of the boat?

40mph.

let the speed of the boat= x mph and given that speed of the stream= 10mph

Then upstream speed will be (x-10) and downstream will be (x+10) given that average speed = 48

the formula for average speed= 2ab/a+b
then 2*(x-10)(x+10)/x-10+x+10= 48 so x=50 but we are asked for upstream speed i.e x-10 so 50-10= 40 mph
