Hi gmatchase,
Happy to help. Here is my reasoning and thinking as I went through this question....
A bullet train travels in excess of 150 miles per hour. Therefore, if a train travels slower than 150 miles per hour, it is not a bullet train.
Ok. So argument is the definition of a bullet train is it goes faster than 150mphWhich of the following most closely parallels the reasoning used in the argument above?
So we are interested in the format of the argument. We don't actually care about the content. If we look at the argument it is of the form. XXXX (Bullet train) is defined by YYYY (150mph). So if YYYY (150mph is not present it is not XXXXX (a bullet train). Which of the below is like that.... (A) An orange ripens only on the vine. If it ripens on the vine, then it is not an orange.
Quite easy to dismiss. This sentence is nonsense. Firstly it says oranges ripen on the vine. Then says if it ripens on the vine it's not an orange.(B) Newspapers are often read by more than one person. Therefore, magazines are also likely to be read by more than one person.
nope. This is both wrong in style 'often' means we're not definite like we were before. It also isn't a logical conclusion of the first sentence that the second is true(C) An earthquake of 5.0 or above on the Richter scale causes massive damage. If there is not massive damage, then the earthquake did not attain a 5.0 or above
Yes this seems to work. Massive damage is above 5.0. If not above 5.0 no massive damage.(D) A supersonic plane travels at speeds in excess of Mach 1. If it is not supersonic, then it will travel at speeds below Mach 1.
A tempting one...However this has the argument the other way around. It says X is defined by Y. So if not X then Y(E) Fluoride generally prevents cavities. If there are no cavities, then there was no fluoride used.
Nope. Fluroride 'often' so not always.
