A car testing company tests its cars for the durability of its tires. The company tested a certain number of tires for the length of their durability. Is the median time greater than the mean time?
I. More than 25% of the tires lasted longer than 4000 hours
II. Less than 50% of the tires lasted longer than 1000 hours

I would say E.
Let's assume that the company tested 3 tires.
If we have 2 tires that lasted 5000 hours et 1 that lasted 4000 hours. Median is 5000 and mean is 4666 hours.
If we have 1 tire that lasted 5000 hours et 2 that lasted 4000 hours. Median is 4000 and mean 4333 hours.
Am I missing something here ?

I would also say E just because the statements say more than that or less than that, so no exact value could be determined....

Hi,
Is the answer C? Answer Choice C applies for all n > 2.
For n <= 2, the question stem does not make sense because 50% of 2 is 1 and less than 50% of the tires (here 2) last more than 1000 hours.
So, I think the answer should be C.
Can you please give the OA?
THanks.

I would say C if the 2 hypothesis were:
I. More than 25% of the tires lasted longer than 4000 hours
II. More than 50% of the tires lasted longer than 1000 hours
In this case for 1+2) we would have:
Median < 1000 since at least 50% of tires < 1000
and Mean > 1000 since at least 25% of tires >4000
so Median < Mean

petefromi,
if more than 50% of the tires lasted more than 1000 hours, median > 1000 and not < 1000.
Your explanation is fits exactly if the question is as it is.

oa is E
I dont understand what you guys think is wrong with the question
Here is my reasoning
suppose there are 4 tires, a,b,c,d
1, b, 4001,4001
b can be anywhere from 1000 to 4000
here, the mean has to be more than 1000
the median has to be more than 1000
but there is no relation.
