A car traveled 462 miles per tankful of gasoline on the highway and 336 miles per tankful of gasoline in the city. If the car traveled 6 fewer miles per gallon in the city than on the highway, how many miles per gallon did the car travel in the city?
(A) 14
(B) 16
(C) 21
(D) 22
(E) 27

462/l = 362/l + 6, l = 100/6

mpg in city is : 362/l ==? 362 * 6/100
==> 22

Using back solving got the answer B....

Actually have to pick an answer which is multiple of both 462 and 336.

336/462=x-6/x
126x=2772
x=22

Think thatr B) is correct-on the highway it is 22 mpg, but in the city it is 22-6=16mph

Let x be the milage highway.

462/x = 336/(x-6)
->x = 22

in city 22-6=16

Let's look at it this way:

Let "X" be the milage on the highway, then x-6 is the mileage in the city.

Tank capacity of the car = 462/x (because car ran for 462 miles for full tank)

Also, tank capacity = 336/(x-6)

Now, we can equate these, since tank capacity of the car is same!

462/x = 336/(x-6)

Now, solve for "x", you will get x = 22.
But what we want is x-6 (mileage in the city), therefore x-6 = 22-6 = 16.
