A car travels downhill at 72 mph (miles per hour), on the level at 63 mph, and uphill at only 56 mph The car takes 4 hours to travel from town A to town B. What is the distance between the two towns?

1) The return trip takes 4 hours and 40 minutes.
2) The distance between town is multiple of 3.

I would go with A since we know that it takes 40 more minutes to go back, town A is at a higher elevation than town B, and we only need to calculate how many miles are uphill and downhill...we know that going uphill ads 40 minutes to the return trip.

I do not know how, but I am pretty certain that this is enough to come up with the distance.

I am not sure how a multiple of 3 helps us.

what is the source of this Q?

from the question stem we have:

D=rt
D=72x+63y+56z where x+y+z=4=t

I: tells us that the last hill on the way home took 2/3 hour longer to travel on at 56mphso we now have 72x=56(x+2/3) which if you work it out i believe x=2 1/3. which means the mountain 1 downhill is 168 miles.

we now have: D=168+63y+56z y+z= 1 2/3. i think this can be set = 168+63y+72z (but in this scenario y+z=1 ??!!)

and thats where i would stop because i have already taken too much time on the test!!!:lol: i would guess A... because I managed to squeeze quite a few equations out of the info they gave me. not sure what i could do with statement II
