Eliminate all except C and E as the others don't have a proper usage of such as. Such as is used when giving examples.

Between C and E eliminate C as it changes the meaning implying that all catfishes give temperature of one specific lake.

Hence E remains.

Between C and E, I will go with E.

In situations like this where the difference between C an E is only in the last part "temperature of one specific lake " and "one specific lake's temperature" is there an "always correct" answer? Please explain..

Can somebody explain this please

Can someone sxplains why option C is wrong. Is it only because option C has more words than E

A catfish passes on to its offspring not only a particular genetic makeup and also definite environmental needs, such as for one specific lake’s temperature and salinity.

Mark the terminal non-underlined portion : .......... AND SALINITY

C : Need........................ for the temperature of one specific lake............AND SALINITY : implies = Temp of one sp lake But what about the Salinity ( Is it of the lake / is it of the soil near the lake ? what = ample scope of ambiguity, Salinity in isolation doesn't convey anything .

E : Need........................ for one specific lake’s temperature..............AND SALINITY : Clearly conveys Lake's Temperature AND Lake's Salinity

Thus E wins over C

According to http://grammar.quickanddirtytips.com/li ... ch-as.aspx you can use "like" for a comparison. The difference is confusing me since there was another question where the answer was actually "like". Can someone give me the black and white rule of thumb?

I think it is D on this one. ""but also" is the right complement for not only. Like fits more properly than such as

Hi

Parallelism so but also is ||

option left is 3,4,5

like is used for comparison and such as for introducing example
so we can use such as because sentence is introducing example of needs.
dat narrows down to 3 and 5
5 conveys proper meaning

After some more digging, I am more confident that the answer is E. You use like for comparisons.

"This apple tastes sweet, like candy". You are comparing how the apple tastes to another thing. You wouldn't say "This apple tastes sweet, such as candy".

You use such as for lists or inclusions.

"I only eat fruits, such as apples, oranges, and pears".

C) but also definite environmental needs, such as for the temperature of one specific lake - Parallelism error
D) but also definite environmental needs, like one specific lake’s temperature - like one is incorrect
E) but also definite environmental needs, such as for one specific lake’s temperature - Correct
