Total distance = 60 miles
City = 10 miles or 1/6
Highway = 50 miles or 5/6

Weighted average: (25 * 1/6) + (40 * 5/6) = 225/6 = 37,5

Answer is 36

10/25 + 50/40 = 33/20 gallons for entire trip

so trips lasts 60 miles

60 * 20/33 = 36.36

The car uses 1/25 gallon per mile in the city and 1/40 gallon per mile on a highway

Therefore, during the 60 miles (10 in the city, 50 on a highway) that it has to travel it would use:

10*1/25 + 50*1/40 = 33/20 gallons for the 60 miles i.e. 33/(20*60) gallons per mile on average

==> consumption = 1200/33 miles per gallon, which is close to 36

==> answer is (D)

1/25*10 = 0.4
1/40*50 = 1.25

Total gasoline = 0.4+ 1.25 = 1.65

Average for 60 (10+50) = 60/1.65= 36.3........
