A certain class, consisting of a lecture and a question-and-answer session, lasted from 2:45 to 4:30 one afternoon. If the lecture lasted from 2:45 to 4:15, then the question-and-answer session was what fraction of the total class time?

A) 1/7
B) 1/6
C) 1/5
D) 1/4
E) 1/3

The total time was 105 minutes, and the lecture was 90 minutes. Thus, the question-and-answer session was 15 minutes, which is 15/105 = 1/7 of the total class time.

Can be solved with some mental math and approximation.

if the class were held from 2:30 sharp to 4:30 sharp, then total it would have been an even 2 hours= 120 mins. However since the class started at 2:45, all we need to do is reduce 15 mins from 120 mins to find the total minutes of the session = 120-15= 105 mins

The Q&A was clearly only 15 mins (from 4:15- 4:30). so the fraction can be calculated as= Q&A session/Total session time = 15 mins/105 mins= 1/7. final answe : A

total class time: 105 min
lecture time: 90 min
Length of Q & A: 105 - 90 = 15 min
15/105 = 1/7
IMO Ans = A

Duration b/w 2:45 to 4:30 = 105 minutes

Duration b/w 2:45 to 4:15 =90 minutes

Duration b/w 4:15 to 4:30 =15 minutes (QnA)

As a fraction, QnA/Total Class time = 15/105 = 1/7

(option a)
