E. We know that the range is from 5 to 20 for the 5 employees. Therefore, the total of the salaries combined should be between:
4*5 + 20 = 40
and
5 + 20*4 = 85

Of choices given:
1) 5*7.5 = 37.5 --> out of range
2) 5*9 = 45 --> good
3) 5*16.75 = 83.75 --> good

Only 2 and 3 are possible, therefore E

We are trying to find the range of the total salaries. If the salaries were between 5 and 20 inclusive, then we try to find the extreme values. Therefore, I assumed 2 scenarios.
1- 4 employees are paid the maximum (20$) and there is one who is paid 5$ --> 5 + 20*4 = 85
2- 4 employees are paid the minimum (5$) and there is one who is paid 20$ --> 4*5 + 20 = 40

Shouldnt the range be
5*5 = 25
5*20 = 100

Why doesnt 1 work?

If all 5 employees earn $7.50, then isnt the avg $7.50?

What am i not seeing? :?:

Sorry Paul...maybe all the studying is making me stupid but I dont see it.

How can you get 40 as a min? If the 5 employees each earn $5/hr then together they earn 25/hr. Right?

All 5 cannot earn 5$. At least one has to earn 20$ because it is stated that that range of salaries is 5 to 20$.
