Plug in numbers

r = 100
x = 2

so 3(100)(2) = 600/100 = $6 but we get a 50% discount so 6/2 =$3
so plugging in 100 for r and 2 for x we need to get an answer of 3

A. 3(2)(100)/2 = 300
B. 3(2)/(200)(100) = 6/20,000 no good
C. 3(100)/200(2) = 300/400 no good
D. 3(2)(100)/200 = 600/200 = 3
E. 2(100)/600 = 200/600 = 1/3

It was direct for me.

1 person.... 1mile........> r cents
3person.....1 mile........> 3r cents
3person.....x mile........>3rx cents

50% discount.............> 3rx/2 cents

In dollars.....> 3rx/200

tricky gotcha question. These questions get me all the time.

the last step is to convert cents into dollars.

This type of trick just don't have any real world application. If I do my calculation for the cab fare and forgot to convert cents into dollars, I would catch myself before paying $2000 for a$20 cab ride.

it was also very straight forward for me.

(3*x*r) = total cost of miles travelled for 3 people

(3xr)/2 = 50% discount

cents to dollar conversion
[(3xr)/2] * 1/100
3xr/200
