Each set has 12 even and 13 odd numbered questions leading to total 96 even and 104 odd questions. He answered $$96 + 3/4*104 = 96+78 = 174$$ questions correctly

I agree with the answer. 96+74=174. Straight forward! Anything confusing?

Odd -> 13 * 8 = 104

So 3/4 = 3 * 26 = 78

All even = 8 * 12 = 96

Total = 174
