the incorrect part is the "it was" after the "and". So just remove it and have the rest of the phrase intact.

So E is the right answer!

"E" it is.

"the first book by a Black woman and it was only the second published by an American woman"
This whole phrase is a modifier which itself must be a parallel. In addition to that,"Only" should be placed just before the required word. Here placing "Only" before the "Second published:" makes sense and prevails over the others.

(A) -ism problem described above
(B) -ism problem described above
(C)Only wrongly modifies published.
(D)Only wrongly modifies American Woman
(E)Correct.Reason is described above

Clearly // ism - Answer must be (E)

A collection of 38 poems by Phillis Wheatley, a slave, was published in the 1770’s, the first book by a Black woman and only the second published by an American woman.

(A) it was only the second published by an American woman - It , doesn't fit into the parallel structure...

(B) it was only the second that an American woman published - Not at all parallel..

(C) the second one only published by an American woman - Only , used wrongly...

(D) the second one only that an American woman published - Only , wrongly used , further the second part by doesn't fit in ...

(E) only the second published by an American woman - Looks the best , ant it is the correct answer..
