3. A collection of 38 poems by Phillis Wheatley, a slave, was published in the 1770’s, the first book by a Black woman and it was only the second published by an American woman.(A) it was only the second published by an American woman
(B) it was only the second that an American woman published
(C) the second one only published by an American woman
(D) the second one only that an American woman published
(E) only the second published by an American woman

Why is it E (with no pronoun reference) versus A with the "it"

Thanks.

i think E follows parallelism ...also "IT" as used in A is not required here.

E because it is the only choice that is parallel. The first book by...only the second published by...I can't describe this well but I believe there is no need for a pronoun if two actions/clauses refer back to the same original noun and the meaning of the statement is clear. Ex) John mowed the lawn and (he) trimmed the hedges.
