I chose E.
test of parallelism: the first book... the second (book). The last sentence act as an appositive, thus no need to complex the structure with "IT". A and B OUT.
C and D suggest that only the second one (of 2 books) was published by an American, but, as a matter of fact it was the second-numbered book.
