How is the source to that question, because it has a very poor construction to the GMAT without commas and the question is not underlined. i`m not a expert but for me all choices are wrong because the use of which is ambiguous on all choices and must refer to a name not a thing as a movie, but ignoring the which without comma i go for D.

A comic book industry giant, known for its popular super-powered characters, sued an animation studio soon after the production of a movie which plagiarized these characters ended.

Before solving this question I will like to point that GMAT doesn't use WHICH without comma. Anyways here is my explanation
2 actions, which occurred at different point of time, are mentioned in this sentence along with the use of word "AFTER", which clearly outlines the sequence of the actions.
Giant "Sued"
Movie Ended

A) sued an animation studio soon after the production of a movie which plagiarized these characters ended - Correct
B) had sued an animation studio soon after the production of a movie which plagiarized these characters ended- Use of "HAD sued" and "AFTER" creates ambiguity in the the sequence of the actions. Thus Incorrect.
C) had sued an animation studio before the production of a movie which plagiarized these characters ended- - This is grammatically correct option, but this option changes the original the original sequence of the actions. Thus Incorrect
D) sued an animation studio soon after the production of a movie which plagiarized these characters had ended- This is grammatically correct option, but GMAT prefers simple past if sequence of the actions is indicated by keywords such as "Before, After etc". Thus Incorrect
E) has sued an animation studio soon after the production of a movie which plagiarized these characters was over - Use of Present perfect tense is incorrect here.

After narrowing down to either choice A or D, I marked choice D because in Choice A because I find choice D grammer more correct and further I am not getting flow of sentence (deriving the correct meaning) in second part of choice A. what is Official Answer (OA)?

I do not agree with Economist at all on this one. In fact I very much doubt the quality of the question.

IMO D.

I narrowed down to A & D, but looking at the sequence of events:

1. A comic book industry giant, known for its popular super-powered characters, sued an animation studio
2. Soon after the production of a movie which plagiarized these characters had ended. In this case, the production had ended before the comic book company sued the animation studios.

Using simple tense doesn't clearly convey the sequence of the events. Even though GMAT doesn't prefer 'Had' wherever not necessary, it does allow the use of 'Had' to clearly indicate the clear time marker in the sentence.

Please provide the OA along with OE.

Thanks!!

It has to be A,
D uses after along with the perfect tense. This is not accepted, We need not put before and after alond with perfect tenses.
Hence the answer by economist should also not be accepted.
