Is the usage of "which" wrong in C because there is no comma?
I read on the forums that which is nomally used to introduce a parenthetical element.
Please correct me if I am wrong

yes, coma is not there. But more than this, C is in passive and unnecesarily wordy too.

Sorry, I disagree with u on this.
"which symbolized the possibility of freedom to him " Same thing appears in the choices (A) also.
Correct me if I am wrong.
dvs112: Another point : "Africa which was.." changes the tense, which is wrong I guess.

(A) that some Blacks return to Africa, the land that, to him, symbolized the possibility of freedom
- A is the best. 'that some blacks return ot africa' is what Marcus Garvey advocated and 'that, to him symbolized possibility of freedom' modifies the land appropriately.
(B) that some Blacks return to the African land symbolizing the possibility of freedom to him
- Afican land is redundant and a bad way to phrase returning to Africa
(C) that some Blacks return to Africa which was the land which symbolized the possibility of freedom to him
- 'which' should not be used to introduce the modifying phrase for 'land'. The possibility of freedom is an essential piece of information and should not therefore not be introduced by which.
(D) some Black’s returning to Africa which was the land that to him symbolized the possibility of freedom
- disjointed and awkward sentence. Passive voice not preferable.
(E) some Black’s return to the land symbolizing the possibility of freedom to him, Africa
- Same as E. E changes the meaning of the sentence as well.
A is best.

A) I choose this
(C) that some Blacks return to Africa which was the land which symbolized the possibility of freedom to him
redundant (which..which) and doesn’t make any sense
(D) some Black’s returning to Africa which was the land that to him symbolized the possibility of freedom
wrong use of “Black’sâ€

advocate that is idiomatic, not an idiom. that is used as to start a restrictive clause here.
