A fence as in fence, the ones we all see has a 42.5 foot fence with 1/2 foot wide vertical boards are arranged 3 feet apart. How many vertical boards are needed for the entire fence?

The trick I think the connector between each fence but no length is given!

Pretty difficult, I would say.

Let us draw a picture

* is a stick
_ is an in-between foot


Thus, the fence is:

*_ _ _ *_ _ _ * _ _ _ * _ _ _ and so on

If X is the number of sticks, then X-1 is the number of in-between three-feet sections.

Finally, X*1/2+(X-1)3=42.5, where X=13

Ans=13

I got the same answer but I actually drew the picture before I got it. Could you explain your formula. I didnt understand the x-1 bit. Please elobrate.

An example of using X and X -2 is
I play two games and win 50 percent and I win 25 percent of remainder. Clearly, the remaining games has to be greater than two. Hence, x -2.

But, in this case I really don't see how Stolyar applied it:
