(D) Mark Twain wrote a letter in the same year as he published The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn that

The main problem with D here is that the sentence does NOT secifically tell if Twain published the adventures of huckleberry finn. It's only showing similarity in the year of publication of the letter and the Adventures book or whatever it is. Also, "that" at the end of answer D indicates that the adventures of bucklebbery Finn is what "reveals", not the letter. This is incorrect and thus choice D alters the meaning.
The same problem with E

Now, the reason why C and favored over A is that A indicates that the adventures were published, which is incorrect. The book titled with "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn" is what was publish. Therefore, there is a subject-verb-agreement error. "was" should be used instead of "were". Furthermore, the clearity of meaning is better in C for the use of "in the same year that" because that refers to the year and correctly expresses the meaning.

Our winner:
(C) A letter by Mark Twain, written in the same year that The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn was published,

That is NOT the main problem with D. The green part is the reason why D is wrong.
