Vannu, tarek99 is right on here. "OR" is a classic parallelism marker. When you see that word, you should look for parallelism problems. Notice how "or" is used: "Would you like to drink soda or tea?" --> The two nouns in parallel are "soda" and "tea." It would be incorrect to say "Would like to drink soda or drinking tea?" "I am going to run or swim today." --> The two verbs in parallel are "run" and "swim." It would be incorrect to say "I am going running or to swim today." In your example, the flood either one thing or another, so those two things need to be parallel. Make sense? Brett

Please explain.. I choose option D. We need to have parallelism between 2 adjectives. "gradual" is an adjective and so is "cataclysmic."

Please explain.. ' whether' is used when you have alternatives as in 'this or this'. ' if' is used when you have only one option. In the question above, since its about flood being gradual or not, we have to chose 'whether' instead of 'if. Looking into option A, D and E -here comes the parallelism. A or BSo the answer is D - whether the flood was 'gradual' or 'cataclysmic'
