as far as this question is concerned...I couldnt come down to any specific answer......
Bigtooth...can you explain why it should be A... since A just says" As people age, muscle and bone tissue tends to make up a smaller and smaller proportion of total body weight."....so this can happen in either of the two ways....body weight remains constant and weight of muscle and bone tissue reduces or the weight of these 2 remains constant but the overall body weight increases..(may be due to excess fat !)
still somehow I cant logically connect the opposite views of the argument...

A) if proportion of muscle decreased vis-a-vis that of total bodyweight then this is the only explanation as to how gaining would keep that "healthy" weight. This will resolve the paradox as to why people who maintain their weight actually die earlier.
B) directly contradicts the stem
C) This introduces a third variable: smoking. Weight gain may have nothing to do with the health level
D) directly contradicts the stem
E) directly contradicts the stem
I don't see how A is correct. As people age, they gain more weight, as a result of which, their existing bone and muscle mass loses its value as a percent of a whole. How does it help us explain that it is good to gain a pound a year?
C introduces smokers, whose bodies are leaner and who tend to die younger than non-smokers. By gaining weight, these people may make up the weight they lose due to smoking.
Wouldn't hang my hat on this argument, but I go with it nevertheless.
