Is this because the worms can not themselves be a species but can come from a species.
Which leaves C and E

But C repeats the reference to the worms already made by "ones"
therefore E
?

Is the question to be decided based upon the idiomatic usage i.e. "believe to be"

specimens are themselves not the species ; specimens are "of a species" .

Hence E wins.

adding continuation to the sentence
a) that she believes are - a species this says specimen is a species



b) that she believes them to be - a species this says specimen is a species



c) she believes that they are of - they refers to specimen and specimen is not a species



d) she believes that are a species never before seen at close range - once again the same reference



e) she believes to be of
