A Newly discovered disease is thought to be caused by a bacteria. However, recently released data shows that the bacteria thrives in the presence of a certain virus, implying that it is actually the virus that causes the new disease

B The virus has been shown to aid the growth of bacteria, a process which often leads to the onset of the disease
C The virus alone has been observed in many cases of the disease

this is an OG question.

Answer is C. If only virus was found in many cases of the disease, then definitely Bacteria is out of question!

B - wrong as it simply repeats what is said in the second sentence of the stem, it's not a new piece of evidence: |bacteria thrives in the presence of the virus|=|the virus aids the growth of bacteria|

C - correct:
implication in the stem - the virus causes the new disease
evidence in (C) - virus alone has been observed in cases of the disease

E - wrong
implication in the stem - the virus causes the new disease
evidence in (E) - suggests that both the virus and the bacteria play an equal role in the disease

IMO (C) is best.

SmashingGrace: Just to point out, IMO your explanation for (B) is not correct, to me (B) seems to be a weaken the Q rather than strengthen. As per (B) it is the "growth of bacteria" which is responsible for the disease and not the virus itself. Correct me if I am wrong.
