although passively constructed, (A) stands here because of the correct becuase "contend that + theory"

5 billion people (actually over 6 billion now) is not what the linguists are emphasizing.

As GMATT73 has explained, it is the thousands of languages that can be traced rather than the 5 or 6 billion people themselves. The number of people is mentioned to qualify the languages part.
Take away the people part, you'll still retain meaning; but take away the languages part and the sentence falls apart.
