I would go for C for the || structure
the cells <B> adhere </B> to one another, <B>beat</B> in unison, and <B>adopt</B> specialized orientations exclusive of one another.

D it is. A is the only choice that comes close, but the contrast between "unison" and "exclusive" seals the deal for the use of "yet."
