I will go with C to maintain paralleism. I feel there is no need to use the -ing form

D here is the best. The parrellism choice is a trap because the last part of the sentence brings up something that these cells don't do together.

D makes sense.
use of "And" is incorrect.
beating in unison yet adopting specialized orientations exclusive of one another.
This example shows that understanding the meaning of entire sentence is important and not just go by grammar rules.
