C is fine, but lacks the contrasting tone...But it appears to be the best choice

I will go with C on this one. It makes the sentence parallel.

I would go with D. Participial phrase is fine and "yet" establishes the right contrast b/w the 2 actions

Yup, you need to contrast the unison yet separate structure.
I believe C would require "peculiar feature" to be plural.
I support D as well.

I still think C is the best. True, D does do contrasting of the two actions, but to be a grammatically better sentence, paralllelism would be more important. That C does not provide a contrast is okay as it has not got to a point when readers cannot tell the difference (as in bad comparisons or poor modifiers)

I like C too.
IMO, the parallel structure is more important.
I guess the question is whether the peculiarity is in the features of the cells in the heart area or in the contrasting actions (beating in unison but adopting specialized orientation). So I think "peculiar feature" could be singular.

D does not suffer from parallel structure.
D uses present participle to describe the process of the cells adhering to one another: the participial phrase acts as an adjective giving extraneous information to the cells which adhere...

C says:
A peculiar feature of the embryonic mammalian circulatory system is that ... the cells adhere to one another, beat in unison, and adopt specialized orientations exclusive of one another.
Ill crap my pants if that turns out to be the right answer
By turning it into a list, it becomes 'features' not feature, but it is parallel!

Good point Sige
Also, D would go into detail describing that "peculiar feature" as one that is beating in unison yet adopting...
