I think it's easiest to see if you draw out a string of 12 inches (since the string is cut in 3rd and 4th, 12 is the best number to pick).

So, when the string is cut in 3rd, we have 4 parts of 3 inches, 6 inches, 9 inches and 12 inches.
When it is cut in 4th, we have 3 parts of 4 inches, 8 inches, and 12 inches. Now, if you have drawn 12 parallel lines with these marks on it, write out the diff between marks. There are 3/12, 1/12, 2/12, 2/12, 1/12, and 3/12. Reduce them, we have 1/4, 1/12 and 1/6 => answer D
