A politician wrote the following: "I realize there are some short-comings to the questionnaire method. However, since I send a copy of the questionnaire to every home in the district, I believe the results are quite representative...I think the numbers received are so large that it is quite accurate even though the survey is not done scientifically."

The writer of the above statement makes which of the following assumptions:

(A) Most people who received the questionnaire have replied.
(B) Most people in the district live in homes.
(C) The questionnaire method of data collection is unscientific.
(D) The large number of replies means that a high proportion of those sampled have replied.
(E) A large, absolute number of replies is synonymous with accuracy.

The answer seems E! Can you expound why the other choices shouldn't be selected as answer?

IMO-E,

Premise- 1.short-comings to the questionnaire method,2.results are quite representative
Conclusion-.the numbers received are so large that it is quite accurate.

Option E fills the gap between High Number & Accuracy.
(E) A large, absolute number of replies is synonymous with accuracy.

I hope my method is correct.
OA please!!

IMO E
Premise: large number of people are surveyed.
conclusion: large number of response means the questionaire method is a highly accurate tool.
A) Most people who received the questionnaire have replied.=> negation method :some people who recieved the qs have NOT replied. this doesnt do anything to upset the notion that a large number of response points to accuracy(B) Most people in the district live in homes.=>some people.......do not live.....again doesnt upset the conclusion(C) The questionnaire method of data collection is unscientific.=>its not an assumption that leads to the conclusion; the writer readily agrees that the method is unscientific but it doesnt affect his conclusion
D) The large number of replies means that a high proportion of those sampled have replied.=> ...negation: a small propotion have NOT replied.....it doesnt really matter is a small propotion hAavent replied....a lagrge number still have replied....conclusion remains unaffected
(E) A large, absolute number of replies is synonymous with accuracy. A large, absolute number of replies is NOT. synonymous with accuracy. If this is true, then the conlusion is falsified directly. Hence this is the correct answer.

edit: the negation rule:Try the opposite of the answer choice. If the argument fails then it means that is the answer.

Googled this one for confirmation of my answer. E it is. E fills up the logic gap.
