For me, my boss knows. I have to tell them, since we have yearly career discussions. Also, if we go out for drinks, he's going to ask me what I do in my free time. Since I'm mostly studying, I don't really want to lie to the guy do I?
It may have hurt my chances for a promotion. Maybe you want to tell him you are looking to continue working and go part-time?
Also, your boss will probably have to write you a letter of reco. He will have to know at some point right? If that is the case, then it's probably better to be upfront rather than drop the bomb and say I need a letter of reco for MBA. That will really take them off-guard.
I guess it just depends on your situation and employer. I work for a fortune 50 company and MBA is fairly desirable if you want to move up. I just want to get it done with before I get married, have kids, etc.
Thanks Soul... Yeah depends pretty much on the employer and the kind of work you do ... that precisely is where my problem or rather my confusion lies in. I am into IT services and consulting and MBA is certainly not a great value add in my current profile (its pretty technical ).. however my company itself is really huge and there are some high profile consultancy job profiles where an MBA is extremely desirable to the extent of being almost mandatory. I am aiming at such a job profile in the near future. But my immediate boss has nothing to do with such kind of a profile and fulfilling my aspirations would mean stepping out of his revenue stream.
I also have a promotion lurking around the corner and was therefore more skeptical about revealing my GMAT plans. Because i surely have a lot of time to go from now to the time when i would eventually quit to do an MBA program. And I am very positive that I would be promoted in the mean time.
But as you said, letting him know before hand looks like a safer bet considering that I have to go to him for recommendations eventually. And the fact that my Boss might actually appreciate my honest revelations and may also consider accommodating me in a suitable profile.
