A recent study has found that within the past few years, many doctors had elected early retirement rather than face the threats of lawsuits and the rising costs of malpractice insurance.

(A) had elected early retirement rather than face
(B) had elected early retirement instead of facing
(C) have elected retiring early instead of facing
(D) have elected to retire early rather than facing
(E) have elected to retire early rather than face

( D ) seems to be correct. What is the mistake with ( D )?

A recent study of ancient clay deposits has provided new evidence supporting the theory of global forest fires ignited by a meteorite impact that contributed to the extinction of the dinosaurs and many other creatures some 65 million years ago.

(A) supporting the theory of global forest fires ignited by a meteorite impact that
(B) supporting the theory that global forest fires ignited by a meteorite impact
(C) that supports the theory of global forest fires that were ignited by a meteorite impact and that
(D) in support of the theory that global forest fires were ignited by a meteorite impact and that
(E) of support for the theory of a meteorite impact that ignited global forest fires and

( C ) seems to be correct. Retiring and facing are in the same tense!! is there some mistake in the answer choice ( C )?

A report by the American Academy for the Advancement of Science has concluded that much of the currently uncontrolled dioxins to which North Americans are exposed comes from the incineration of wastes.

(A) much of the currently uncontrolled dioxins to which North Americans are exposed comes
(B) much of the currently uncontrolled dioxins that North Americans are exposed to come
(C) much of the dioxins that are currently uncontrolled and that North Americans are exposed to comes
(D) many of the dioxins that are currently uncontrolled and North Americans are exposed to come
(E) many of the currently uncontrolled dioxins to which North Americans are exposed come

Again, ( C ) seems to be the correct choice to me. If not , what's the mistake with the answer choice ( C ) and please explain what is the correct choice with explanation.

D) have elected to retire early rather than facing
(E) have elected to retire early rather than face

This question is testing parallelism. The verbs retire and face should agree. To retire......to face or retiring .....facing. As we can see, retiring...facing is wrong because the correct construction is HAVE TO + INFINITIVE. Thus the correct answer is E, to retire rather than (to) face.

(B) supporting the theory that global forest fires ignited by a meteorite impact
(C) that supports the theory of global forest fires that were ignited by a meteorite impact and that

The answer is B. Answer C is wrong because it does not make sense. Take a look:
A recent study of ancient clay deposits has provided new evidence that .... and that contributed to the extinction of the dinosaurs and many other creatures some 65 million years ago.
So, the study provided evidence that contributed to the extintion of dinoaurs!!!!!!!!!

The subject "uncontrolled dioxins" is countable so you have to eliminate all the answers with much.. many is correct.

Between D and E. I will pick E since it is more concise plus does not change the original sentence.
