A recent study of college students shows that, contrary to predicted results, special nutritional planning does not positively affect students’ grades. Sixty students, half of whom were given a nutritionally balanced diet, had grades no higher than did those students who were not placed on the diet plan.
Which of the following, if true, is most useful in determining the accuracy of the study described above?
Performance of business executives was shown to improve drastically after major alterations were made in their diets
Honors students, after altering their diets, maintained that they did not change their study habits
Students who participated in various fitness regimens found that their grades improved appreciably after they altered their exercise habits.
High school students who previously had low grades found that after they altered their diets, their grades improved dramatically
All of the college students who volunteered for the study were either in their first or second year of college

I somewhat disagree here unless of course someone is willing to explain.
B and D seem to say the same thing regarding executives and high school students respectively.
so if the anser is D it might as well be B since they pretty much say the same thing about different focus groups.
Any thoughts pls?

(B) says: Honors students, after altering their diets, maintained that they did not change their study habits
Study habits has nothing to do with the grades they get in school. The argument is about improvement of grades through planning nutrition and not study habits improving after diet alteration. Therefore, (B) is out-of-scope.

Even though the OA is D, i would go with B, because to validate the study we need to know that the study habits was not altered when the students were in the diet, while B talks about only Honor students it is still good to know...
D only adds to the confusion because it discusses about different set of students (high school vs college) and predicts the opposite result (the diet plans helps against the argument taht says diet plans probably does not help)
I feel the real logical answer is having information about the grades of people under diet and who are not under diet before they went on the diet, which is missing in the answer choices..so i guess no use discussing that..

I'm sure Folaa was referring to A. i also have the same view.
When a question asks what information will be useful in determining the accuracy a study, shouldn't one be looking out for other factors that will produce the same effect the original study is claiming to produce?
Based on that i chose C, since A and D just restate what the study is saying but about other groups which i don't think helps in determining the accuracy of the study.

Kwasi,
We are only concerned with students. Results from any other experimental group does not help us (afterall business executives are not students). That's my thought.

I believe that is exactly why Folaa and myself are saying that A and D should be out.
So i still stick with C.
