A recent survey of all auto accident victims in Dole County found that, of the severely injured drivers and front-seat passengers, 80 percent were not wearing seat belts at the time of their accidents. This indicates that, by wearing seat belts, drivers and front-seat passengers can greatly reduce their risk of being severely injured if they are in an auto accident.
The conclusion above is not properly drawn unless which of the following is true?
(A) Of all the drivers and front-seat passengers in the survey, more than 20 percent were wearing seat belts at the time of their accidents.
(B)Considerably more than 20 percent of drivers and front-seat passengers in Dole County always wear seat belts when traveling by car.
(C) More drivers and front-seat passengers in the survey than rear-seat passengers were very severely injured.
(D) More than half of the drivers and front-seat passengers in the survey were not wearing seat belts at the time of their accidents.
(E) Most of the auto accidents reported to police in Dole County do not involve any serious injury.

an explanation of correct answer will be appreciated.

This is a really weird question. Unless I am totally missing the point here. I'd go with C, and will try to explain if its correct.

Welcom you SWETA in the discussion forum.

Also thank you for posting the question for discussion and clearification as well. But it would be better if you post the verbal (and math ) question(s) in its(their) respective place(s). for verbal, pls follow the link to place your questions and querries: http://www.gmatclub.com/phpbb/index.php.

Hope moderators move this question to the right place.

About the answer, definetly A is correct. if the people in the survey represent more than 20% as drivers and front seat passangers, the conclusion is properly drawn.

The Correct Answer is Option A.
It connects the Accidents, Dole County and that figure is just to confuse you i.e 20%.

But, the post is a very good one.

Keep posting like the ones.

The answer is B. The survey of accident victims says that 80% were not wearing seat belts. To make a connection between not wearing a seat belt and the propensity of having an accident, it must be known that in the entire population (not just accident victims) much less than 80% do not wear the belt. i.e in other words, the rate of finding a non-belt-wearer is much higher among accident victims than otherwise. This is what B says.

This answer is misguiding. In CR, you don't "connect words". You make a logical reasoning. Try to understand the question and solve it!

I appreciate your suggestion and explanation, but I feel there is flaw in your reasoning.

The reasoning says

80% hurt while driving are not wearing seat belts in the survey.
This implies
20% are wearing seat belts and not hurt in the survey.

This is what option A says.

Option B correctly indicates that 20% wear seat belts while driving.
But it does not indicate how many of them were wearing seat belts at the time of accident.
If it would have mentioned that 20% were wearing seat belts at the time of accident, then option B could have been considered for answer.

Shweta: You are the one to solve the tuggle between A and B. can you please do that.

Premise:
1) of the severly injured drivers and font seat passenger, 80% were not wearing seat belts at the time of accident

Conclusion:
2) By wearing seat belt, passengers/driver can reduce risk of being severly injured

A is good. It tells us a small percentage (20%) wore seat belt and resulted in less severe injuries
B is not important
c is too vague. Rear seat passengers were less severly injured perhaps because they need not bear the brunt of the impact
E is out of scope

I'll take A

IMO it is B,

Let us say there are 1000 drivers in Dole. 10 severe accident, 8 did not wear seat belt. 2 wore it, now let us assume B is not true and only 20% wear seat belt in dole county, 800 people are driving around without seat belt this is a large proportion, so obviously more accident will involve people without seat belt, because most of them are driving without seat belt, so to make the claim genuine the proportion of people wearing seat belt should be more than 20%.

If 99% of all drivers didn't wear a seat belt, would it be any surprise that non-seat belt drivers were 80% of the severely injured population? Of course not.

Only A rules out that possibility

(A) Of all the drivers and front-seat passengers in the survey, more than 20 percent were wearing seat belts at the time of their accidents.

so if 99% (a number more than 20%) wore seat belt and got in accident (that is why they are in survey) then the conclusion is still improperly drawn, because they got in accident inspite of wearing seat belt....so A does not help IMO
