A recent survey of all auto accident victims in Dole County found that, of the severely injured drivers and front-seat passengers, 80 percent were not wearing seat belts at the time of their accidents. This indicates that, by wearing seat belts, drivers and front-seat passengers can greatly reduce their risk of being severely injured if they are in an auto accident.
The conclusion above is not properly drawn unless which of the following is true?
(A) Of all the drivers and front-seat passengers in the survey, more than 20 percent were wearing seat belts at the time of their accidents.
(B) Considerably more than 20 percent of drivers and front-seat passengers in Dole County always wear seat belts when traveling by car.
(C) More drivers and front-seat passengers in the survey than rear-seat passengers were very severely injured.
(D) More than half of the drivers and front-seat passengers in the survey were not wearing seat belts at the time of their accidents.
(E) Most of the auto accidents reported to police in Dole County do not involve any serious injury.

C is out of scope and unsupported by the passage.

Correct answer should be A. 80% of the drivers seriously injured were not wearing seatbelts. What about all the other minor accidents??

Beware of such statistically misrepresentative CRs.

I think D is more appropriate.

If more than 50% front seat people were not wearing seat belts -- this makes the conclusion stronger.

The argument is the following:

Evidence:of the severely injured drivers and front-seat passengers, 80 percent were not wearing seat belts at the time of their accidents.

Conclusion: by wearing seat belts, drivers and front-seat passengers can greatly reduce their risk of being severely injured if they are in an auto accident

B, C and E are out of scope. D is not un assumption. Imagine all the drivers and fp were not wearing seat belts, can you draw any conclusion about wearing seat belts?.

Example how A is correct:

Let total people surveyed = 100
total people seriously injured in auto accidents in Dole County = 10

80% of 10 or 8 persons were NOT wearing seat belt
20% of 10 or 2 persons were wearning seat belt

now if A is FALSE:

out of people surveyed(100) less than 20 % were wearing seat belt

let:
90 - do not wear set belts
10 - wear seat belts

if we look at proportion now, it tells different story

8 out of 90 people who do not wear seat belt get seriously injured in auto accidents. close to 9%

2 out of 10 people who wear seat belt get into serious injury. 20%

the argument doesn't hold
