A recent survey of all auto accident victims in Dole County found that, of the severely injured drivers and front-seat passengers, 80 percent were not wearing seat belts at the time of their accidents. This indicates that, by wearing seat belts, drivers and front-seat passengers can greatly reduce their risk of being severely injured if they are in an auto accident.

The conclusion above is not properly drawn unless which of the following is true?

(A) Of all the drivers and front-seat passengers in the survey, more than 20 percent were wearing seat belts at the time of their accidents.
(B) Considerably more than 20 percent of drivers and front-seat passengers in Dole County always wear seat belts when traveling by car.
(C) More drivers and front-seat passengers in the survey than rear-seat passengers were very severely injured.
(D) More than half of the drivers and front-seat passengers in the survey were not wearing seat belts at the time of their accidents.
(E) Most of the auto accidents reported to police in Dole County do not involve any serious injury.

C by POE.. I found the choices very irrelevant.. even C doesn't look good but the others seem to be even worse.

How is C correct? Where does the argument talk about rear seat passengers??

It has to be between A and B.

The focus of the argument seems to be auto accident victims. Survey was conducted among them. So the answer choice we choose should talk something about that and validate some aspect. E talks about auto accidents.

If all the auto accidents involve serious injuries, then there is no point in wearing seat belts. Because, even when the passenger wears seat belt as in 20% of the cases mentioned above, there is going to be no protection. Hence, there is no point in wearing them.

I would bet on E.

Yes you are right. I must have gone nuts when I chose C.

IMO it's D because the stem says 80% of front seat drivers and passengers were not wearing seat belts MEANING that more than half of the front seat drivers and passengers were not wearing seat belt.

A-- its talking about survey , that in survey of all auto victims more than 20% wearing belt i.e less than 80% victoms were without belt. if proportion of victom without belt in seroiusly injured is more than 80% . this leads to logical conclusion that wearing belt can reduce seroius injury.
B-- talks about public in general but validity of argument can be drawn form A easily
C- irrelevant as survey is about drivers and front-seat passengers
D- not to the point
E- irrelevant[/i]
