A recently published report indicates that the salaries of teachers
continue to lag far behind other college-educated professionals, because they
make an average of nearly $8,000 a year less at the start of their careers and
almost $24,000 less
a year by the time they reach the age of 50.

A. other college-educated professionals, because they make an average of nearly
$8,000 a year less at the start of their careers and almost $24,000 less
B. other college-educated professionals, by an average of nearly $8,000 a year at the
start of their careers, to almost $24,000
C. what other college-educated professionals are paid—making an average of nearly
$8,000 a year less at the start of their careers and almost $24,000 less
D. those of other college-educated professionals—by an average of nearly $8,000 a
year at the start of their careers to almost $24,000 less
E. those of other college-educated professionals—by an average of nearly $8,000 a
year at the start of their careers, and by almost $24,000

For me is between D and E.
Please clarify.

A. other college-educated professionals, because they make an average of nearly $8,000 a year less at the start of their careers and almost $24,000 less - wrong comparison. The sentences must compare salaries.
B. other college-educated professionals, by an average of nearly $8,000 a year at the start of their careers, to almost $24,000 - the same: wrong comparison.
C. what other college-educated professionals are paid—making an average of nearly $8,000 a year less at the start of their careers and almost $24,000 less - wordy.
D. those of other college-educated professionals—by an average of nearly $8,000 a year at the start of their careers to almost $24,000 less - I think that "to" usually is to establish a range (from...TO....). This is not the case. Here the sentence is showing 2 specific average in different moments in the life of a teacher.
E. those of other college-educated professionals—by an average of nearly $8,000 a year at the start of their careers, and by almost $24,000 - much better, (but that comma (,) before "and" I don't know if it is really necessary) :s

By POE, my answer is E.

I think I deserve kudos 8-)

Agree with metallicafan - answer choice D would be more appropriate to use with a range of values.

E also keeps better parallel structure than D.

I was stuck between D and E, and finally choose D. Probably E has a better parallelism. Dont know :(

Those should be present as it is a comparison between teachers' salaries between two periods.
Hence, left with D and E.

And E wins because of parallelism. Hope this clears..

You are right, "to" is to show a range. That's why I eliminated D.

Comma (,) before end is mandatory in one case as shown below.

I love crcket, and my fav. player is MURALI.

The comma is mandatory in the above sentece as the subject (I) of the first IC is diff. from that (My fav. Player) of the second IC.

In the rest of the cases, the comma b4 and can be ignored.

e.g: i love cricket and foodball. (, is not manadtory here)

Hope it helps.

Murali.

The answer is E, in D, there is "by...to", which is inappropriate.

E is a clear shot. Comparison and parallelism are issues with the rest.

from X to Y show a range

comma used in choice E make the paralleled items clearer. One is the salaries of teachers, another belongs to professionals.

So, choice E is the best.

initially i picked E, but then when I looked at the numbers in option E, which doesn't say whether they are 'less' or 'more' ('less' is clearly stated in original statement)...D is clearly wrong as it changes the meaning by introducing the range of values

I'm confused now, E doesn't looks to be correct answer

Is there an option F?
