I wonder what's wrong with D?. To me D sounds the best. A has a passive voice statement which ETS don't like

I think D changes the meaning of the sentence. A says that the "report attributes" while D says that the "doctors attribute"

hmm.. actually report can only report what others attribute, report can't really take a decision as such. Hence D would still be right. I am making sense? :?

Agree with "A". As per the stem, I think we shouldn't assume that "doctors" are attributing, it could be anyone.

can anyone explain the difference between A and B, especially the usage of "much of" in this case.

My take:

The paragraph is trying to quantify the "increase in cases" and not the absolute number of cases - hence the use of "much of"

If i can only go with my first instinct, I think I will do very well on the verbal...damn...is it me or does everyone has the same issue, usually my first choice are correct, but i just somehow over rule it and try to use some freaky logic or rule that doesnt exist...

A report released by the American Diabetes Asociation maintains that much of the increase in cases of type II diabetes can be attributed to the poor eating and excercise habits of young Americans.

(A) much of the increase in cases of type II diabetes can be attributed
(B) many of the increase in cases of type II diabetes are attributed
(C) they can attribute much of the increase in cases of type II diabetes to
(D) doctors attribute much of the increase in cases of type II diabetes to (E) many of the cases of increased type II diabetes can be attributed

IMHO, D is obvious wrong.

in D, a report maintains "doctors attribute" ? it sounds odd to me since you need the data after "maintains", not "doctors."

between D and E, E changes the meaning. D means the cases are increased, but E means type II diabetes are increased.

I will go with A
