A researcher discovered that people who have low levels of immune-system activity tend to score much lower on tests of mental health than do people with normal or high immune-system activity. The researcher concluded from this experiment that the immune system protects against mental illness as well as against physical disease.
The researcher's conclusion depends on which of the following assumptions?
A. High immune-system activity protects against mental illness better than normal immune-system activity does.
B. Mental illness is similar to physical disease in its effects on body systems.
C. People with high immune-system activity cannot develop mental illness.
D. Mental illness does not cause people's immune-system activity to decrease.
E. Psychological treatment of mental illness is not as effective as is medical treatment.

Only B seems to be relevant here.
Choice A is wrong, because the argument states that people with normal or high levels of immune-system activity do better on tests. There is no distinction made between normal or high immune-system activity, therefore A is out.
I don't find Choice D very convincing, as it is not implied anywhere
Choice B seems to be the best among the choices given. If Mental illness is similar to physical disease in its effects on body systems, then lower levels of immune activity can negatively affect physical systems and mental illness, and vice-versa

we should negate the different choices to get the right answer. lets negate D) => Mental illness DOES cause people's immune-system activity to decrease. is the conclusion still stable ? the conclusion is => The researcher concluded from this experiment that the immune system protects against mental illness as well as against physical disease. basically it says that mental illness is an effect of a weak immune system. the negation of D) says that the weak immune system is an effect of mental illness. if D) is true, the conlcusion falls apart. lets negate B) => Mental illness is NOT similar to physical disease in its effects on body systems. that information does not affect the conclusion.

Pick D.
It is a question for assumption. If D is not right, then the conclusion can not be established.

Picked D.
If D wasn't an assumption, the author will not be in a position to cite that the "the a poor immune system leads to bad results on mental tests", for then the cause and effect relation could be questioned.

Ouch!! You are right Howmanytogo. This is an assumption question, and I should have negated the answer choices, to see which negated answer choice will cause the conclusion to fail. Negating choice D, will cause the conclusion to fail.
