A researcher discovered that people who have low levels of immune-system activity tend to score much lower on tests of mental health than do people with normal or high immune-system activity. The researcher concluded from this experiment that the immune system protects against mental illness as well as against physical disease.

The researcher’s conclusion depends on which of the following assumptions?

(A) High immune-system activity protects against mental illness better than normal immune-system activity does.
(B) Mental illness is similar to physical disease in its effects on body system.
(C) People with high immune-system activity cannot develop mental illness.
(D) Mental illness does not cause people’s immune-system activity to decrease.
(E) Psychological treatment of mental illness is not as effective as is medical treatment.

Pls explain your choice!

B) ?

Since conclusion says immune system protects against mental and physical disease... assumption is mental response when immune system is weak will be similar to the physical response.

D for me. Cause and Effect issue. Two items are correlated, and researcher decides one is the cause of the other.

Straight D. The assumption has to validate the argument's cause and effect.

D it is.

(A) High immune-system activity protects against mental illness better than normal immune-system activity does.
Doesn't take in to account normal immune system

(B) Mental illness is similar to physical disease in its effects on body system.

Vague

(C) People with high immune-system activity cannot develop mental illness
.

Again, what abt normal ?

(D) Mental illness does not cause people’s immune-system activity to decrease.

CORRECT

It we challenge this assumption the argument breaks down. If mental did indeed cause people's immune system to go down, then the test results and hence the conclusion have no meaning.

(E) Psychological treatment of mental illness is not as effective as is medical treatment.

Throw this out..scope.
