A researcher discovered that people who have low levels of immune-system activity tend to score much lower on tests of mental health than do people with normal or high immune-system activity. The researcher concluded from this experiment that the immune system protects against mental illness as well as against physical disease.
The researcher’s conclusion depends on which of the following assumptions?
(A) High immune-system activity protects against mental illness better than normal immune-system activity does.
(B) Mental illness is similar to physical disease in its effects on body system.
(C) People with high immune-system activity cannot develop mental illness.
(D) Mental illness does not cause people’s immune-system activity to decrease.
(E) Psychological treatment of mental illness is not as effective as is medical treatment.

B. Author is likening mental illness with physical disease to make the conclusion.

Should be (D).

Conclusion: The immune system protects against mental illness.
Assumption: Mental illness doesn't harm the immune system.

(D) Mental illness does not cause people’s immune-system activity to decrease.

I would choose D

It is a cause-effect CR. It is assuming low immune system result in mental illness but not in the other way (mental illness result in low immune sytem). Answer D provide that assumption.

Yea def D.

immune system good for mental and physical.
but if mental issues cause bad immune system, conclusion would not hold true.

Premise:
1) people who have low level of immune-system activity -> score lower on test
2) people who have normal/high level of immune-system activity -> score higher on test

Conclusion:
3) immue system protects against mental illness + physical diseases

Assumption has to provide missing link between premises and conclusion.

D provides this missing link. If mental illness will not reduce immune-system activity, then we can say that the immune-system will protect against mental+physcial disease.
