A researcher discovered that people who have low levels of immune-system activity tend to score much lower on tests of mental health than do people with normal or high immune-system activity. The researcher concluded from this experiment that the immune-system protects against mental illness as well as against physical disease.
The researcher's conclusion depends on which of the following assumptions?
A. High immune-system activity protects against mental illness better than normal immune-system activity does.
B. Mental illness is similar to physical disease in its effect on body systems.
C. People with high immune-system activity cannot develop mental illness.
D. Mental illness does not cause people's immune-system activity to decrease.
E. Psychological treatment of mental illness is not as effective as is medical treatment.

Pls explain your answer. Thanks

Conclusion: the immune-system protects against mental illness as well as against physical disease.

The researcher's conclusion depends on which of the following assumptions?
A. High immune-system activity protects against mental illness better than normal immune-system activity does. – high vs. normal immune system activity comparison is not assumption of the argument
B. Mental illness is similar to physical disease in its effect on body systems. – Mental illness effects can not be assumption
C. People with high immune-system activity cannot develop mental illness. – too extreme – cannot develop
D. Mental illness does not cause people's immune-system activity to decrease. – Hold on
E. Psychological treatment of mental illness is not as effective as is medical treatment. – what is effective is not part of assumption

Answer - D

I find it following Manhattan’s CR Guide outline on the assumption based question.
For assumption based questions, look for following relations:
1. Feasibility premises – that is possibility of happening of stated premise
2. Logical Gap
3. Eliminate alternate path to the same end
4. Eliminate alternate mode causation

All most all assumptions questions follow under the above conditions

This one Cause-effect pattern. low levels of immune-system activity(c)---- low score mental health (E)
To conclude this it should be assume that reverse is possible E---C
Hence D

I also agree with D with the following reason:
A. This does not support any of the premises or conclusion.
B. Same as A.
C. This contradicts the conclusion.
E. Same as A.

Note: As I have learnt, "out of scope" is not applicable for assumption type question.
