a's speed is 1.5 times b's speed vs a is 1.5 times faster [#permalink] New post 30 Oct 2012, 05:10
Hi all

I have a basic question on these 2 questions.
1.A's speed is 1.5 times b's speed.The ratio of their speeds is ? Ans 3:2
2.A is 1.5 times faster than b.Ratio of their speeds is? Ans 5:2

I can understand problem 1,ratio of a/b = 1.5
= 1.5*2/1*2 = 3:2

But how is problem 2 different from problem 1 to give an answer of 5:2?

Thanks
Vandhana

Hi Vandhana,

If you try to write these stems using algebra, you would be able to see the difference clearly.

1. A = 1.5B (A is 1.5 times B)
=> A/B = 1.5 =3/2

2. A-B = 1.5B (A is 1.5 times faster than B)
=> A=2.5B
=> A/B=2.5 =5/2

Hope it helps.

Another way you can look at the English in #2 is...

A is 150% faster than B.

B = 1

A = 2.5 (150% faster/ 1.5 times faster.)
