[Reveal] Spoiler:
A) A seasoned rookie betting heavily on a high percentage hitter, especially one who has a good average and has performed consistently in the past, makes it likely to miss the decline in his performance, especially if it is interspersed with brilliant innings. not clear what both of those refer to

B) A seasoned rookie who bets heavily on a high percentage hitter is likely to miss the decline in his performance, more so when it is interspersed with brilliant innings, especially one who has a good average and has performed consistently in the past. completely out of context, and not clear what it refers to

C) Betting heavily on a high percentage hitter, especially one who has a good average and has performed consistently in the past, a seasoned rookie is likely to miss the decline in the hitter’s performance, especially if it is interspersed with brilliant innings. seems not so bad

D) A seasoned rookie who bets heavily on a high percentage hitter, especially one who has a good average and has performed consistently in the past, makes missing the decline in his performance likely more so when it is interspersed with brilliant innings.really awkward and probably wrong? does not seem to mean anything

E) A seasoned rookie’s heavy betting on a high percentage hitter, especially one who has a good average and previously performed consistently, makes it likely to miss the decline in his performance being interspersed with brilliant innings. wrong construction + change of meaning

Hard to really see what's the author want to express here, no sentence seems right. I would say C because it seems to be the less wrong one but without a lot of conviction. Especially the "is likely to miss" does not seem to really make sense, wouldn't "is likely to have missed" make more sense here ?

Hi,

I would say C as well.

The main problem with this sentence is the need to clarify who is likely to miss the decline in the high percentage hitter’s performance and the need to clarify that “his performance” refers to the high percentage hitter and not the seasoned rookie. B comes close to correcting the problems, but the last clause is still confusing. C isn't a particularly pretty sentence, but it avoids the reference ambiguity and attaches the subject of the sentence most clearly to the verb "miss".
