A sequence is formed by selecting 4 numbers from the set {1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9}. these sequences will be distributed to participants of a game show. If 36 of the sequences were left over after one sequence was assigned to each participant, how many participants were there.?

(note : for example, sequence 4567 is different from sequence 6547)

Agree but it is -36, not 32, but the final number is OK!

I get 2988 as well

(9*8*7*6)-36=2988

That's a heck of a lot of contestants for a game show!!

People,

The question does not say that one digit can not be used multiple times in a sequence. That is 4433, 4444 could also be diferent sequences.

In that case the total number of participants = 9^4 - 36 = 6561.

Read the first line of the problem, there, 4 is given only once. You need to select the numbers from that set only.
