A star will compress itself into a white dwarf, a neutron star, or a black hole after it passes through a red giant stage, depending on mass.
Depending on mass as a modifier is correct if it modifies the whole phrase? :?:

But it doesn't make sense if it modifies after it passes through a red giant stage?

Whose a grammar expert?
