Ans E

Given 2x = 30 so x =15
Have to find 2x+3x+5x = 30+45+75= 150

Hi All,

Ratio questions on the GMAT can be handled in a variety of different ways, depending on how you prefer to 'do the math.' Praveengeol's approach focuses on 'multiples' (and absolutely works). Here's a way that focuses on 'part-to-whole':

Since the ratio of the three strips is 2:3:5, you can think of all of this in terms of 'parts' - there are 2 parts + 3 parts + 5 parts = 10 total parts.

The smallest piece is 2 parts out of 10 total parts. Since we know that the smallest piece is 30 inches long, we can set up a part-to-whole ratio:

2/10 = 30/X
1/5 = 30/X
X = 150

Total Length = 2x + 3x + 5x = 10x

Given, 2x = 30 i.e. x = 15

Total Length = 10*15 = 150

Answer: Option E
