A study of a math program implemented in several pre-schools indicates that children who received specialized math education between the ages three and five, had significantly higher math scores in 3rd and 4th grade than their classmates who did not receive this instruction. The proponents of the math argue that the introduction of this program for all children age three to five will significantly improve their chances for success in school. I agree that the answer is C. It provides another potential cause (in addition to Preschool) that may have resulted in all these math geniuses.

Hi,

Just came across this CR... IMO, the answer seems to be B which states that Cognitive abilities of 3 to 5 year old children keeps on changing and thus, weakens the conclusion that introduction of this program for all children age 3 to 5 will improve their chances for success in school.

Choice C seems to be going far away from the scope of the argument.

Any thoughts?

A) Most parents send their children to preschool for social development and do not have a clear idea about what types of education they want for their children --> the awareness of parents before the undertaking of the math program does not influence their children's abilities later at all

B) Cognitive abilities of 3- to 5-year-old children are constantly changing --> not clear enough to have an influence

C) The children in the pre-schools that were studied had previously been exposed to another math enrichment program --> because they had previously studied another kind of math program, maybe this previous program helped them to success, not the later program did so; or the combination of the 2 program helped them so. Because the argument asserts the individual role of the later program, this choice helps weaken its role, hence weakening the argument

D) Children are not really interested in enrichment programs in preschool --> too general, here only math enrichment program is mentioned

E) The cost factor needs to be specified and established before a large scale program can be undertaken --> out of scope

This is the only answer choice that introduces a new element that nullifies the positive effects of specialized math education in pre-school children.

i think it should be D.

argument : introduction of the program leads to success of a child in school

most damaging to conclusion would be if child is not interested and not if child has been exposed to another program previously.
