A survey of alumni of the class of 1960 at Aurora University yielded puzzling results. When asked to indicate their academic rank, half of the respondents reported that they were in the top quarter of the graduating class in 1960.

Which one of the following most helps account for the apparent contradiction above?

(A) A disproportionately large number of high-ranking alumni responded to the survey.
(B) Few, if any, respondents were mistaken about their class rank.
(C) Not all the alumni who were actually in the top quarter responded to the survey.
(D) Almost all of the alumni who graduated in 1960 responded to the survey.
(E) Academic rank at Aurora University was based on a number of considerations in addition to average grades.

Explain pls

B,C & D don't explain the contradiction
E explains the process of ranking, but not the contradiction
So A is the answer

Agreed.

ex. 100 people graduated in 1960.
50 people resopded to the survey
25 from the top 1/4
25 from the bottom 3/4

(A) A disproportionately large number of high-ranking alumni responded to the survey.[Hold it]
(B) Few, if any, respondents were mistaken about their class rank.[Irrelevant]
(C) Not all the alumni who were actually in the top quarter responded to the survey.[That is true, but does not help in explaining discrepancy – eliminate it]
(D) Almost all of the alumni who graduated in 1960 responded to the survey.[If so, we shouldn’t see this discrepancy – eliminate it]
(E) Academic rank at Aurora University was based on a number of considerations in addition to average grades.[Irrelevant]

Answer: A

(A) A disproportionately large number of high-ranking alumni responded to the survey.
This is the only answer that explains the contradiciton. Because the stimulus doesn't mention about the number of the responders. May be the responders included all the top students and only a few of the other students.
