48-16+8 = $8

I know this is the worst way to explain a math problem. But since you guys have already explained it pretty well... do i need to :-)

Both ways are right chunjuwu.
1) What you did was:
Total the guy actually spent = 48
Total the guy should have spent = extra charge + full amt upto 16 + 1/2 (rest) = 8 + 16 + (48-16) * 0.5 = 40
Prospective savings = 48 - 40 = 8

2) What I did was:
Just calculating the savings only (or rather company's expenditure only):
Company has to pay the 1/2 of rest, but it gets $8 from the guy
So guys savings = company's expenditure = (48-16)/2 - 8 = 8

This method probably saves just a couple of seconds...
