A tourist purchased a total of $1,500 worth of traveler’s checks in $10 and $50 denominations. During the trip the tourist cashed 7 checks and then lost all of the rest of the number of $10 checks cashed was one more or one less than the number of $50 checks cashed, what is the minimum possible value of the checks that were lost?

(A) $1,430
(B) $1,310
(C) $1,290
(D) $1,270
(E) $1,150

In the seven cashed checks, for minimum value we need the 10$ checks to be 3 and 50 $ to be 4, which gives a total value of 230.
Hence lost money = 1500 - 230 = 1270...!!

Both B and D satisfy the statements. But only D is the minimum value.

So ans is D.

total=7 chkz...

10$x+ 50$(x+1) = 230 where x=3

x is taken 3 because... $10 could be one more or less by one...

we can also get the ans 190$ but that wud be not the LEAST as asked...
hence D = ans as given
