Although, option E clearly is the one superior to all others. But, I fail to see the reasoning behind saying,

More Feeders in the Area ->> More likely they are to be dominated by a flock of a single type of bird.

and vice-versa, Less Feeders ->> Less likely they are to be dominated by a flock of a single type of bird (Not said by the stimulus, but implied.)

Can anyone please thrown some light on this.

Many Thanks :-)

A variety of different foods offered in multiple feeders will attract a high number of birds of many species. This is because different birds favor different foods, and multiple feeders allow more birds to feed at the same time. However, if too many feeders are placed in one area, the number of species attracted will decrease.

Which of the following best helps to explain the result of placing too many bird feeders in one area?

A)Predators, such as cats, tend to wait near bird feeders in order to ambush the birds that come to feed.
B)Some birds prefer to feed on different foods at different times of the year, so feeders should be adjusted seasonally.
C)Regardless of the number of feeders in an area, squirrels are likely to be attracted to the food offered.
D)If only one type of seed is to be offered, black-oil sunflower seed is the most popular type of bird feed available.
E)The more feeders in an area, the more likely they are to be dominated by a flock of a single type of large bird.

Multiple Feeders = More number of Birds
Many Feeders in one area = Less number of birds of the same type, (however total number of birds may increase)

What is causing the increase in feeders ----> Reduction in the variety of species of birds ?

Definitely (E)

More Large birds are attracted (Of same species ), thus the proportion of large birds to the entire birds attracted may actually increase , hence the no of species of other birds decreases.

A)Predators, such as cats, tend to wait near bird feeders in order to ambush the birds that come to feed. -- This might reduce the total number of birds but has no bearing on the number of species.
B)Some birds prefer to feed on different foods at different times of the year, so feeders should be adjusted seasonally. -- Time of the year is irrelevant.
C)Regardless of the number of feeders in an area, squirrels are likely to be attracted to the food offered. -- This doesn't explain why the number of species might decrease.
D)If only one type of seed is to be offered, black-oil sunflower seed is the most popular type of bird feed available. -- Type of seed offered is irrelevant.
E)The more feeders in an area, the more likely they are to be dominated by a flock of a single type of large bird. -- Although there is no logical explanation given (why will the likelihood increase?), this option stands out only because it is better than the rest.
